One Question Quiz: Do You Need a Therapist or a Coach?

Hey,

I'm going to give you the only question you'll ever need to decide whether you're a prime candidate for therapy or for coaching.

Let me explain the difference.

Therapists are highly trained and qualified professionals who help you uncover and understand mental and emotional blocks that are keeping you in a downward spiral of bad thinking and bad behavior which keep you stuck in constant drama, conflict, anger, sadness and/or chronic hopelessness.

In other words, they spend a lot of time helping you unravel your PAST so you can finally imagine a better way forward.

Coaches are highly trained and qualified professionals who help you create a vision for your life that is so powerful it keeps you awake at night. And if you have a good coach...your new sense of personal power, blinding clarity and inspired motivation will probably make you cry.

In other words, they spend a lot of their time in your FUTURE...helping you get out of your own way with new tools, skills, energy and a mindset that propels you forward.

I can't count how many times a man has emailed me after an intense one hour coaching call to say,

"That 60 minutes tonight trumps my last 3 years of counseling...hands down."

How is that possible?

He didn't know he didn't need therapy. He needed a coach. A totally different approach.

But how do you know if you need a therapist or a coach?

You only need to answer one question.

Do you believe you have what it takes to muster the emotional strength and courage to step outside this triangle?

This is the DRAMA TRIANGLE. It's where people go who have no belief whatsoever in their ability to master their thoughts and emotions.

This is where they perform a daily ritual of bouncing between the finger pointer, the peacemaker and the downtrodden victim.

They have perfected the dance. They are comfortable in there even though they're unhappy. And they have usually succeeded in sucking a fair number of people into the dance with them. These people help them sustain the illusion that living in the triangle is "normal".

If you're currently doing the dance and don't believe you can escape it under your own power...you might need a therapist.

In my style of coaching there is no drama dancing allowed.

If you don't get a huge smile on your face at the very IDEA of stepping through a trap door and standing outside saying to your old self, "Hmmmm...I don't think so cupcake."...then you're not ready for coaching. (with me anyway)

Why?

Because that richly imagined future I mentioned earlier - the one that keeps you up at night - will never happen if you're living in the triangle.
