I recently connected with a favorite cousin of mine I haven't seen for years. She asked me skeptically, "What is it you do again??", you know, with that look and that voice.
I explained that I guide men who want help in improving their lives and their relationships with women. I told her that when men reach a certain point of hunger, pain, or fear they need a friend - another man to be there for them. I help them realize their gifts, and their value, and the power they have to change their life and those around them.
She said, "Really? Why you?", as she earnestly looked me right in the eyes.
She's always been direct, just like her mom, my favorite Aunt.
So there I was. Face to face with a very strong, independent, successful woman about to reveal MY experience with hunger, pain, and fear. It would have been chicken shit to dance around the issue and just talk about "my purpose and my passion". I told her a little about how I arrived here - about the decay of my 28 year "model" marriage, and discovering crap about myself I didn't like.
I started out slowly with the story of how inadequate I had felt as a man and a husband as I watched my wife pull away from our marriage, from all we built, from me...and move toward other people. People she found more attractive. More understanding. Safer. Safer? Really?
I got watery eyed as I moved into to the part about how some guys can become so mean, unintentionally threatening, and hurtful at home while the rest of the world thinks they're wonderful.
My confidence grew as I told her about my past experiences meeting and working with men who have gone before me. Initiated men! They lifted me, supported me, pushed me, argued with me, but most of all, loved me without judgment. Then...growth!
By this time of the story I was bold and confident...still with tears on my cheek. I explained my ongoing, amazing education examining women, sexuality, gender psychology, and masculinity. I wasn't nervous or embarrassed. She even commented how "sensual" it was to see a man talk like that! (that's what I'm tellin' you guy)
It was joy. I was thrilled to be dumping my story on her.
I wanted to "dump" it again here for you. No matter how often I talk about it, it feels good to bare my soul to people who get me - who accept me. Thank you for listening!
