During a coaching session with a man who is experiencing prolonged anxiety, sadness or frustration, we will often have this conversation.
"We've talked for about 45 minutes now and you seem a lot calmer than when we started. How are you feeling right now...at this moment."
"Oh, right now I think I'm feeling okay."
"Why is that do you
think?"
"Well, just talking through this and having you listen helps. I'm also realizing that so much of this is out of my control which oddly makes me feel better."
"So...you're okay right now."
"Yeah."
"Will you be okay 60 seconds from now?"
"Umm...yeah...I think so."
"What about 10 minutes from now...will you be okay?"
"Uhhh....probably."
"What about tomorrow morning...will you feel okay then?"
"Jeez...now that I don't
know. Probably not."
And that's the problem.
In one moment we can THINK we're okay based on a momentary thought or
belief which gives us a momentary feeling of "okayness".
And we THINK we have no control over that thinking.
Therefore, the further we get from NOW, the
more uncertainty we feel in our ability to THINK the same thoughts. We start PROJECTING our feelings into the future.
And we conclude that tomorrow morning may just possibly suck as badly as all previous mornings.
